2017 Borgata Poker Open
$300+$40 Mike Sica Memorial Seniors NLH
Prize Pool: $32,400
September 10, 2017
Since its inception, the Mike Sica Memorial Seniors Event is always one of the most anticipated tournaments on the Borgata Poker Open schedule. Named in honor of one of our favorite players, Mike Sica has been remembered every September since his passing with his name on the Seniors Event he enjoyed so much. The tournament drew 108 entries (those who were 50 years or older) and in the end, it was Rich Forte taking home the title, trophy, and $4,771 as the latest champion of this fun event.
The tournament kicked off this morning with a few words from Mike’s daughter Michele Sica Selesky about her father. After thanking the players, cards went in the air and they had a great time from start to finish. Defending champion TJ Shulman was back to defend his title and was able to make it into the money once again shortly before dinner.
Only 15 players remained when the Seniors were sent off on that 60-minute break and they never had another break after they returned. Bret Painter was eliminated soon after the restart followed quickly by Paul Freedman, Kevin McDonnell, and Arthur Bressler. Before they finished one post-dinner level, Jose Malave knocked Howard Schuman out of the tournament in 11th place to set up the final table with Forte leading.
Ben Laves was a quick exit from the final table and Gokhan Saldirdak took a bad beat at the hands of Forte to go out in eighth place. Forte held a huge chip lead at the time and the remaining players quickly worked out an adjusted payout deal to chop up the remaining prize pool. Forte earned $4,771 for his efforts along with the coveted Borgata trophy.
Forte was happy with the payout, results, and (of course) the trophy. He was also excited that he might be able to come out and play more tournaments, now that the trophy will prove to his wife that he knows how to play. This is by far the biggest result of Forte’s career, more than doubling his combined earnings to this point with his last cash coming in December 2014 during the Bar Poker Open.
The Mike Sica Memorial Seniors Event was once again a big hit. The players had a fantastic time, theaction was fast and fun throughout while honoring one of the Borgata’s favorite players.
Congrats to Rich Forte, everyone who cashed, and those who had a great time at the tables.
